Where do you source your mushrooms?
We don't source our mushrooms; we grow them! Our nutraceutical products are made exclusively with mushrooms cultivated at our California farms by master growers passionate about mushrooms and wellness.
These growers are at the heart of our story, having mastered the science and art of mushroom cultivation. They closely monitor each crop to control for relative humidity, oxygen exchange, temperature, and more throughout the growing cycle and harvest each crop at peak maturity to maximize potency.
The Monterey Mushrooms nutraceutical story began over 50 years ago. Today, we grow millions of pounds of mushrooms every year. Our affiliate — Amycel & Spawn Mate — is the global leader in mushroom genetics. We rely on our scientists and research associates who have developed the industry-leading species & strain spores we use. Our team continuously looks for ways to refine and enhance mushroom spore, processes, and testing to ensure our American-grown mushrooms and products meet premium standards.

What substrate do you use for mushroom growth?
Different species require different types of substrates. We grow our White and Brown mushrooms on compost and specialty mushrooms on either hardwood or sorghum.
Where do you source the substrate you use?
At Monterey Nutra, we only use U.S.-sourced materials to eliminate the risk of contaminants found in foreign products. For compost, we use a combination of regionally available products such as racehorse bedding, straw, and nitrogen sources. For specialty mushrooms, we rely on sorghum harvested from small, organic family-owned farms or hardwood sawdust byproducts from the lumber industry that we divert from landfills.
Our choice of substrate materials allows us to grow premium mushrooms with industry-leading purity and potency and meet our sustainability goals.

Functional Mushroom Products
What potency levels can I expect from your products?
Our mushroom powders and extracts contain industry-leading potency of up to five times more than other suppliers deliver, and we confirm that assertion with internal and third-party testing.
We rely on science-backed superior mushroom genetics, optimized growing processes, and refined milling and extraction practices to produce the premium products you need. With each harvest, we conduct internal testing of microbiological and bioactive compounds, including beta-glucans, terpenes, ergothioneine, and more. We regularly confirm our internal testing results with third-party testing.
Do you use mycelium or fruiting bodies in your products? And which is best for our products?
Fruiting bodies are rich in health-promoting bioactive compounds, and mycelium is packed with unique antioxidants and nutrients. Many companies only offer one product type, and you’ll frequently hear debates about which is superior for functional mushroom powders.
At Monterey Nutra, we let clinical research and your specific business needs determine the type of powder or extract that is best for your products. Depending on your required benefits, we can provide both full spectrum or fruiting body mushroom powders and extarcts.

Should I buy extracts or whole mushroom powders?
In general, whole mushroom powders are a great choice for many manufacturers and formulation companies since they contain a broad spectrum of nutrients and active compounds, making them. For ready-to-drink formulas, extracts are more mixable since the extraction process breaks down mushroom fibers.

- Standard pouch size of 20 kg
- Smaller pouch sizes of 1 kg and 5 kg.
Smaller pouch sizes are available for small orders under 10kg only and require a surcharge and are available for small (<10kg) orders only).
